unbridled joy
The thing is, we all can get a little too trained. I know that happened to me. I got so busy doing other people’s choreography, other training and ideas that I almost lost who I was as an artist and human. I was so busy saying what others had to say, I forgot what I had to say. I love that story about the racehorse they retrained by letting it just be a horse so it could remember that it simply loves to run. That is the feel inside my class, inside the work I do. It is the unbridled joy and feeling of yes, tooled inside whatever you want to do better. It’s like having a secret edge under your clothes. It takes a moment to drop into what is inherently you, like the child you once were. It is always worth it, no matter what you do. We tend to gravitate towards linear processes, effort based systems, when in truth learning happens in a spiral.
Sometimes you need to feel the feel of run before you learn the details of how. The more adult we get and live inside the head we can forget to put our heart close to our feet. We can forget that with all our training, we simply love to move and be moved. I teach children too. I am always teetering in the balance to keep the creatures inside them alive as I gently layer form and stories we create. What I notice is that no matter how old you are, or what you know, or if you are a dancer, audience member or normal human being…when things happen in joy, it’s like voila!, magic happens everywhere. I wonder what your story is? I hope you wander into class sometime.
